France

World champion in tourism

France is the world’s No. 1 tourist destination. Because it’s the only country that satisfies the desires of each and every holidaymaker. This is due to the variety of its landscapes, its climate, its culture and its gastronomy.

France serves the world Champagne and exquisite wines. Cheeses and ‘haute cuisine’, the ‘Tour de France’ and the ‘Tour Eiffel’, the fields of sunflowers and the Champs-Elysées.

Paris, ‘City of Light’. A beguiling spot for fans of shopping and fashion. Attractive as well to whomever has been bitten by the culture virus. And for your dear little ones? Earthly Paradise lies within their reach. A half hour away, they can have great fun in splendid Disneyland Park Paris.

And it’s in the south that the term ‘la Douce France’ takes on its full significance. There, you can sit dreamily on the terrace of a little café in the shadow of a plane tree or in warm sunlight. Explore the Provençal markets enveloped in a thousand and one aromas. Take a dip in the clear water of a small cove by beaches of fine sand or pebbles. Celebrities cross your path as you walk along in mythic resorts like Saint-Tropez and ‘la Croisette’ in Cannes.

But, of course, you can’t reduce France to its capital city and the lovely areas in the south. Bretagne and Normandy are there for sea-lovers. And also for the lovers of unspoilt, authentic nature. Because there you find the longest sandy beaches in Europe, steep cliffs and picturesque villages. Are you wild about mountains and skiing? Then, choose the Alpine or Pyrenean heights, the Massif Central with its extinct volcanoes, the Jura mountain range or the Vosges with their great forests. Summer and winter, an inviting destination.

This beautiful country beguiles. Even Dutch and German have expressions for it: ‘Living like God in France’.

Eating and Drinking

Savoir-vivre is a way of life in France. Nowhere else is fine cuisine appreciated as much as in France. Each region has its own speciality. The quality of wines is legendary and they are not necessarily expensive. Just ask for the house wine when you’re dining out and you will not be disappointed. Lunch is generally served between 12 noon and 2:30 pm; dinner, the main meal in France, is served around 8 pm. Service is included in the price, but it is common to leave a tip of about 10% if you have been satisfied with your meal.

Travelling by Car

France has a well-laid out network with national and departmental roads as well as toll motorways, which may be paid by credit card. The speed limit on the motorways is 130 km/h (110 km in rainy weather), 110 km/h on national roads (100 km in rainy weather), 90 km/h on all other roads and 50 km/h in town. Safety belts are obligatory in the front and rear of the vehicle. The alcohol limit is 0.5 pro mille.
